Post subject:  FLAC files

I will be adding links to this one post regarding FLAC files so there is one place to find the loseless media. No comments will be posted in this thread, only links. As I add more, I will edit this post. Please post comments about specific shows in the appropriate thread.

Want to learn more about FLAC?

First of all, I'll try to explain what FLAC is:
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. I don't think that I need to explain what Free means...
Lossless Audio Codec means that when you "convert" the WAV file containing all of the music-data to a FLAC format file, no music data is LOST. When you convert a WAV file to mp3, you lose large amounts of the original data. (you would have to to get to such a small size file). The majority of the data they get rid of when converting to mp3 is the higher frequencies. See http://rush.daneck.com/pages/bad_mp3.htm for some more technical details. Once you have a FLAC format file, (which generally speaking is about 55% of the size of a WAV file) you CAN convert it back to a WAV file. And!!! You get the same WAV file back as the original you started with. So, you didin't lose any music-data.

So, What do I do with the FLAC files?

There are several options. You can install the Flac Frontend software http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm and you can convert your FLAC files to WAV (which you can do with whatever you want. But do me a favour and don't convert them to mp3. If you're on a Mac, you can use http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952 or http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/MacFLAC.shtml

You will need the FLAC codec regardless. You can download it for free from
http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

You can also download a plugin for Nero so you can burn your Flac files directly to an audio CD. http://www.bitburners.com/Nero_Audio_Plugins/

And then another option would be to use the winamp plugin http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=131643 so you can play your flac files in winamp.

Most of the tools mentioned above will do conversions in either direction. From WAV to FLAC or from FLAC to WAV.

There are other lossless codecs out there, but FLAC seems to be the most popular. For several reasons 1) It is reasonably fast. (You can convert faster than you can rip from a CD) 2) It is freely available for any Operating system 3) There's a nero and winamp plugin. 4)It has a built in verification system that makes sure that you don't get any skips/errors. If there is a skip in a FLAC file, it exists in the original wav file too.
