Dont get me wrong.. I love his picking technique, his stuff with Ozzy is classic
as well as BLS, but after a while, I am getting tired and board of the guys playing.. Sorry. He goes back and forth with the jazz pianist in this video, but I would have loved to see the Jazz guitarist in the corner just whip out and slam him with tasteful phrasing.
Sorry guys.. the guy is getting played out real quick.

What is up with that horrible tone??? Also why in the world is he playing with all that distortion and overdrive while sitting in with a jazz band? He sounds so horribly out of place! Zakk really should have played clean. I mean I've heard him noodle around on an acoustic and he clearly has the chops to play clean. I just don't get him sometimes.

I dont know man.. maybe your right.. maybe he should've stuck to a clean channel instead. He had alot of BLS fans there so he probably did that ( used gain ) for them. Definitly sounded "out" for sure. A duel with the jazz guitarist would've been interesting though !

Zakks playing went stale a long time ago. I hate saying it about any player, especially one who I know is extremely capable, but the fact is he hasn't played anything interesting guitar wise to my ears, in a lot of years.

I want to know what happened to the Zakk Wylde lead player who wrote the solo for No More Tears.
I want to know what happened to the Zakk Wylde acoustic player that wrote Dead As Yesterday.
I want to know what happened to the Zakk Wylde who slipped into country mode with a little Chickin Pickin.
I want to know what happened to the Zakk Wylde who knew the meaning of the word phrasing.
I want to forget the existence of lumberzakk that wails the pentatonic scale a thousand times over and over with increasing amounts of distortion and wah.
I want to know what happened to the Zakk Wylde, who even when he was just wailing through scales and improvising, could at least make it sound interesting (see the Slash vs Zakk Wylde voodoo child...mostly improved leads, and done real well)

I agree with you 100%. Although, I think a lot of mus icians decline in their creativity after a while. He seems as if he's going nowhere with his playing.. .ery tangled, non stop speed, lack of quality in his phrasing.

I was there and I definitely agree, there was waaaay too much distortion for him. If he simply used an OD pedal without the knobs taken off so he can adjust the gain, I'm sure it would have sounded a bit better. As for doing a duel with the other guitarist, I seriously couldn't see that happening... He was mediocre at best. He played with an upright bass player (Nicki Parrot) and the pianist before both of Zakks sets and he just played a bunch of jazz chords, no leads or anything.

For those of you saying that his playing has gotten stale, check out some of the newer clinics he's been doing for Gibson with the GD guitar within the past 5/6 months while he's been sober. He's definitely been learning some new riffs and it is a nice change from the monotony that he's been putting us through.

I'm not sure if this is the same video you were talking about but I seen one where he was playing that coffin guitar which was horrendous! There was so much effects on it you could barely tell what he was playing.

I like Zakks playing but this one was horrible.

Maybe tooooooooooooooo much coffee. That IS his new vice these days...

Dec. 1, 2009 Interview with Christopher Toh of TodayOnline.com's Poparazzi

Zakk: "I'm drinking like 6,000 cups of coffee. I'm probably going to have a stroke from drinking that much coffee!"

I would like to see Zakk go back to the basics, such as early BLS where it was all riff based. Dirty, gritty and "in your face". Nowadays it's all overproduced and layered with vocal effects.

Just check out his Suicide Note Pt. 1 cover, which he could have pulled off without any effects and only an acoustic.

Ugh.

i concur! Soniv Brew is an underrated album. Has some ballsy riffs on it...though one of the best songs is an acousric one: Spoke in the Wheel
