Why did he have a long thumb nail? Was it to aid his classical playing?
His long thunb nail (and others) didn't have anything to do with classic playing or finger picking. In fact, his thumb nail was that long, it would have been more of a hinderence than a help.
We have been told he liked to see how long he and his friend could grow them and liked the way it looked.
Simple as that.
