Well, an interesting thread... It's rather hard to choose just 5 best singers, 'cos I certainly like more of them, but I'll try, in no range order.

Robert Plant - unique and distinctive voice, very much feeling in it, one of the best blues/rock singers ever, and now even better than in his glorious 1970s.

Freddie Mercury - great vocal range and strength, great frontman and live performer - although sometimes too pompous.

Ronnie James Dio - Metal God, no doubts. He's one of the very few whose voice didn't change and who is as good now as he was then.

Klaus Meine - the clearest and strongest voice in German hard'n'heavy, absolutely timeless and of pure quality. As good live as on his records. Great man.

King Diamond - his voice is not for everyone's taste but he is unique and very impressive and matches his own complicated music.

I'd like to mention Dougie White - maybe the very best Rainbow vocalist after Dio and one of the best in this generation; Tony Martin, Matt Barlow, Hansi Kursch, Geoff Tate, Jeff Scott Soto. I must mention two great doom metal singers - Messiah Marcolin of Candlemass and Robert Lowe of Solitude Aeturnus - but unfortunately now they are not so good as they were in their younger days. Voice is a fragile thing and must be cherished. Seems that some singers forget about it.

My favourites singers in the public eye (ie world famous)

Sandy Denny-An English national treasure, famous in rock cirecles for her stirring contributiion to the Zeppelin masterpiece Battle Of Evermore
James Dean Bradfield-(Manic Street Preachers powerful frontman)
Jim Morrison-his early hypnotic sound, and his later blues growl
Freddie Mercury-My favourite albums Jazz, Queen 11 and Innuendo
Billie Holliday-Every damn note she sung

Runner up the soprano Maria Callas

Blues: BB King, Robert Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Howlin' Wolf

Reading all this I wonder how often people mention singers I don't think are great as singers :P I don't think they are bad, though... but certainly not in my Top5 or even Top50.
