you ever notice that? all the big bands that have made there mark have had someone in the band die while they were still still active. a few i can think of off the top of my head are

metallica-cliff burton
ozzy-randy rhoads
damageplan/pantera dimebag darrell
lynyrd skynyrd ronnie van zandt
red hot chili peppers hillel slovak
led zeppelin john bonham
acdc bon scott
john lennon
(1980 seen 3 major deaths)
def leppard steve clarke
the jimi hendrix experience
janis joplin
the doors- jim morrison
hanoi rocks-razzle
nirvana- kurt cobain
sublime-brad nowell
alice in chains-layne stayle did i spell that right
hole- krist pfaff
blind melon-shannon hoon
queen-freddy mercury
the mamas and the papas- mama cass
rolling stones- brian jones
ramones-too many to mention
the who- keith moon john entwistle
double trouble-stevie ray vaughan
the crickets-buddy holly
death, control denied- chuck schuldiner
drowing pool-dave williams

then theres some other ones who were in famous bands like
eric carr-kiss
randy castillo-ozzy

im sure right now im missing some other major stars, feel free to add to the list
its sad that alot of bands that we all listen to had someone die when they were an active band. its crazy the deaths in RNR. some by way of self destruction. others by terrible accidents.

*? I think a more interesting point to consider is how many bands suffered a death but went on to even bigger things after losing a band member, as opposed to bands that either were never the same after losing a member, or just stopped entirely.

Yeah can't forget the late and great Phil Lynott. *r*

Also Skynyrd lost Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines in the crash. Also Allen Collins and Leon Wilkinson later on. As of recently the great Billy Powell as well. God bless them all.

Im glad to see someone said Tim Kelly. He was one of my first thoughts after reading a few posts.

I see CDR put Skynyrd and put Ronnie Van zandt. Skynyrd has lost almost all members.Aside from Ronnie there was also:

Cassie Gaines
Steve Gaines
Allen Collins
Leon Wilkinson
Billy Powell
Hughie Thomason (replaced original members)

They have lost the most that I can even recall in the history of bands. Yet they keep going. Gary Rossington is the only surviving member still playing with the band.

I wouldn't mind seeing Artimus Pyle play for them again he was a really good drummer but i know there is some bad blood there with Gary.

Tim was a very good player. I remember getting to meet slaughter in 1997 in Las Vegas.

Only 6 months later he was killed in a car wreck. It was all over Las Vegas news because he lived there.

In 2007 I visited his grave. I now have his autograph on my wall with a small pinch of dirt from his grave as well. I traded him a guitar pick for this lil vile of dirt as a keepsake.

The Ramones have only lost three, which would be the core of the group, and that would be Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee. :(

The Ramones' longtime manager also died recently: Gary Kurfirst.

Thin Lizzy- Phil Lynott
Rush- John Rutsey

John only played on their first album though so I don't know if that counts.

Id have to agree with iby here. Sid was the epitome of the punk look and attitude...

His bass got more of a workout over nancy's head than he ever did playing the dang thing.
